Alejandro at the roaster

Andes, Antioquia

Alejandro Agudelo

I was born in MedellĂn in 1986. I grew up on this farm in Andes, Antioquia. The house is more than a hundred years old, with thick tapia walls and big doors and windows. I am the fourth generation on this land. I love it, I am proud of it, and I want to share it.

After 2002 the country got safer, and we could work the farms again. I learned the old way, beside my family. How to prune. How to pick. How to wash the cherry. Later I studied production, how to run a farm properly, and business at EAFIT.

At the peak we produced 125 tons a year. I have followed that coffee from the tree to the green a roaster buys. I have roasted in Colombia, and since 2019 I have roasted for specialty roasters in the United States. I know both sides of the cup.

In 2014 I married and moved there with my wife. I wanted the people who drink the coffee to know the people who grow it, and the place it comes from. The early start. The rain. The year the price falls. The hope of the family that gets up to pick those beans.

A few times a year I take a small group of roasters to two farms. You walk the work, you cup the lots, and you sit with the producer to talk price. No one in the middle. Harvest runs until December. After that, the trees are picked.
